Lucid Dream Tip: Don’t Get Hip-Checked by Your Reality Check
A “reality check” is a common method you can use to determine whether or not you’re actually in a dream or not. You perform a certain action to see if the results are what you would expect them to be in real life. If the results thumb their nose at the laws of physics, guess what?
… You’re probably dreaming.
Common reality checks that are popular with experienced lucid dreamers include:
- looking at a digital clock to see if the numbers stay constant (if they don’t, that’s a sure sign it’s a dream)
- looking at some writing — if it shifts and moves or doesn’t make sense , chances are it’s a dream
- flipping a light switch — if it doesn’t work, you might be dreaming
- looking in a mirror — if you can’t see yourself clearly, you might be dreaming
- trying to breathe through your nose when you’ve got it pinched closed — if you can, guess what? Yep. Dreaming.
- looking at your hands — if you suddenly have fewer or more than five fingers on either hand, you’re probably dreaming. If not, you should probably see a doctor about that.

Watches gone all melty-like AGAIN? Maybe you're dreaming... or maybe you've finally lost it for good.
Until recently, the reality check I’ve been training myself to use was looking at my left hand to see if my wedding ring was there. Since I never take my ring off, if it was missing I figured it would be a pretty good sign I was dreaming.
Well, last night, I finally did it. I intentionally looked down at my left hand in a dream. But the results weren’t exactly what I’d expected…
